Good Morning! Tuesday July 20, 2010

Good morning! It's a beautiful morning. It's bright and clear, no morning mist today. It'll be upper 90s, maybe even hit 3 digits by this afternoon; and almost no chance of rain. We did get another shower last night, so everything is ok for now ... but will probably need watering again by this evening.
Last night was a pretty good night. I got another step done on the "small project"; had a lovely conversation with one of my nieces (and looking forward to a visit!); and got more of my upcoming fall-into-Christmas scheduling done. I also watched some new shows on TBS ... a station I rarely think to check ... which I enjoyed.
Tonight I plan to get the next step done (all will be revealed eventually, I promise! LOL!), and some work on a sewing project.

Today is "Moon Day (Man's First Lunar Landing)" ... "Special Olympics Day" ... "Independence Day (Colombia)" ... "Marine Day (Japan)".

Quotes of the Day:
"We have all a better guide in ourselves, if we would attend to it, than any other person can be."
-- Jane Austen

"College isn't the place to go for ideas."
-- Helen Keller

Today in history:
In 1940, Billboard magazine published its first "Music Popularity Chart," topped by "I'll Never Smile Again" by the Tommy Dorsey orchestra with Frank Sinatra.

In 1968, the first Special Olympics Games were contested at Soldier Field in Chicago.

In 1969, U.S. astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first men to set foot on the moon.

In 1976, the Viking 1 lander, an unmanned U.S. planetary probe, became the first spacecraft to successfully land on the surface of Mars.

In 1985, treasure hunter Mel Fisher located a Spanish galleon sunk by a 1622 hurricane off Key West, Fla. It contained $400 million worth of treasure.

Today's birthdays include
- Austrian monk and pioneering botanist Gregor Johann Mendel in 1822
- New Zealand explorer Edmund Hillary, who in 1953 conquered Mount Everest, in 1919
- Elliot Richardson, U.S. attorney general under U.S. President Richard Nixon, in 1920
- Actor Sally Ann Howes in 1930
- Actor Diana Rigg (age 72) in 1938

- Singer Kim Carnes in 1945
- Guitarist Carlos Santana in 1947
